All fish at A Trophy of a Lifetime Taxidermy Studio are measured with calipers and a pattern is produced. I then transfer that pattern to a block of foam, and cut them out on a bandsaw. Then I carve and shape them all by hand to match up to the dimensions of each individual fish. There is no buying a generic commercial form and trying to make the fish skin fit a few different forms, instead the form is produced to fit each fish.

Scale tipping is a huge part of the process and not many fish artists take the time to do it. It is simply painting each scale by hand to add the iridescent colors that faded when the skin dried; it is very time consuming but adds incredible depth and realism to the fish.  Most taxidermists charge extra for this, but I include this at no additional charge to my customers.

Great care is taken in fleshing and washing birds to get the feather shine back to its original. I then use proper placement of feathers to give the bird all the lines a live bird would have.  Couple this with a fantastic base and you have a scene right out of nature.

In all of my gameheads you will see that the facial work, nostrils, eyes, and ears are very detailed.  I add the coruncula gland and nictitating membrane to a properly shaped eye in my gameheads. This, coupled with high quality white-banded glass eyes, makes the animal come alive. I also dremel the nostrils out deeply and accurately and add artificial septums in the interior to create a nice natural nostril that is not just hollowed out and filled with putty.

A perfect tan, done in house, and high quality forms make your gamehead one you can be proud to display. Finally, they are finished according to reference photographs with a soft paint job and groomed according to proper hair patterns.

I believe that a nice looking mount begins with the proper anatomy.  You will find great anatomical features in all my mounts, including lifesize mammals.  I take the time to properly measure each animal to get it exactly the same size as it was alive.  If a pre-made body is not available in the exact measurements, I'll make a pattern and carve the body to fit the correct measurements.  This ensures a proper fit, filling out the mammal to its original proportions. Unlike some taxidermists, I can also make alterations to pre-made forms or my own if you have something particular in mind.

Once again, your mount will then be placed on a unique habitat scene, made in our shop, to finish the piece and make it look alive.  You will not be disappointed when you come to pick up your finished piece of art!
